Description

AC Light Dimmer 2-Channel x 1500W

This high-power 2-Channel Pulsar series AC light dimmer offers 256 levels of computer-controlled brightness with lighting effects.  This controller is equipped with dual aluminum heat-sinks and a metal enclosure.  This is the Dual Circuit version, which requires connection to two 15-Amp breakers.  Capable of dimming up to 1500 Watts per channel, this controller capable of dimming a total of 3000 total AC Watts!  Dual fuse provides protection from short circuits.  This is big and heavy controller, perfect for high-power light dimming applications.

Overview

The Pulsar series controllers are designed to offer an industrial grade light dimming solution with a heavy emphasis of connectivity to computers using a wide array of interface technologies. Whether you need to control lights across the room or from the other side of the planet, we have a solution available that offers flicker-free operation in an industrial design built to last many years.  The Pulsar Series controllers have many features that make them extremely easy to use. They are designed for hard-wired installation and are designed to operate every hour of every day.

How it Works

The Pulsar Series controllers wait for a light dimming command. When a command is received, the lights will fade or brighten according to your instructions. The Microprocessor that powers the Pulsar Series is capable of simultaneously handling communications while dimming operations are in progress in the background, keeping your computer free to service other tasks.

The Pulsar Series controllers have 5 buffers that work together to handle your light dimming requests. Buffer number one is used to immediately set the light level to the brightness you desire. Buffer number two is what we call a migration buffer. When a brightness level is stored in the migration buffer, the light levels will gradually change (automatically) to match the migration buffer level. This is particularly useful if you want lights to fade on and off. Instead of writing all the code to fade the lights on and off, you simply tell the second buffer what level you want the lights to migrate to. Since the lights will fade automatically, your computer is free to service other tasks.

Buffers three and four are used to define how fast lights go on and off respectively. So lights can turn on instantly and fade out slowly. Or you can use buffer 5 to set the on and off rate to the same speed (using one command). This allows lights to fade on and off at the same rate.

You have 255 levels of brightness control at your disposal. A brightness level of 0 is off and a value of 1 is very dim (and 254 is full brightness). You can change the AC timing characteristics so that 1 is extremely dim (ideal for LED lighting applications) or so that 1 is an actual usable brightness (for incandescent lighting applications). We have included 3 profiles to help get you started, and you can change our settings to match the types of lights you intend to control.

Just for fun, we added a few lighting effects to help us test out the speed of the microprocessor (requires a controller with 3 or more channels to see the lighting effects). The Pulsar series controllers are not designed for stage lighting applications, as DMX controllers are better suited for lighting effects. And while we are on the subject of DMX… (we know we are going to get this question a lot)… so here goes…

No DMX!

First, it should be stated that we are huge fans of DMX! DMX is a wonderfully mature standard and is the best choice for many lighting effect applications. However, the Pulsar Series light dimmers are not compatible with DMX software or hardware. It is not likely that we will ever make any devices compatible with DMX technologies, as we have a very different goal in mind. We believe DMX to be a wonderful standard, and there are many manufacturers to choose from who offer mature DMX light dimming solutions. So if you need DMX compatibility, the Pulsar series controllers should not be considered. If you need a wide range of connectivity options, or if you need control of your lights from anywhere in the world, we hope you will consider the Pulsar series controllers.

Compatibility

Pulsar Series Compatibility Notes

Pulsar series controllers were designed for use with AC Incandescent light bulbs, and are not for use in AC Motor Speed control applications under any circumstances.  Mercury Vapor, CCLF, and Florescent (tube) lights will damage the Pulsar controller and/or the circuitry built into these kinds of lights.  Note that incorrect wiring of the AC mains will damage this controller beyond repair and may damage your computer as well.  Proper Hot, Neutral, and Grounding is essential for proper operation of this device.  This controller is rated for use at 120VAC at 60Hz, and will not work at 50Hz.  We have had customers use the Pulsar series controllers to control large LCD glass transparency panels with excellent results provided a loading resistor is used on the output.  Other customers have successfully used the Pulsar series to control heating elements.  We have not directly tested Pulsar in these applications, but it is possible that Pulsar can be used in other resistive AC control applications.

802.15.4 Wireless Compatibility Notes

When using an 802.15.4 communication module, it is essential that you use the ZIGMO_PCB to configure the module settings.

A 802.15.4 Modem will also be required.

Bluetooth Compatibility Notes

The default pairing code for NCD Bluetooth devices is 1234.  Users may change the pairing code and other settings, including encryption options, using the ZigMo_PCB, which will provide a USB interface for configuring settings inside the Bluetooth communications module.

Ethernet TCP/IP Compatibility Notes

This device periodically sends UDP Packets on port 13,000, which help identify the IP address of this device on your network.  This device sends UDP Packets to link.signalswitch.com to help users access this device from the internet (this feature can be disable).  Remote access over the internet requires users to configure Port Forwarding on the router that is associated with the WiFi communications module.  Port Forwarding is outside the scope of NCD technical support.  Please visit PortForward.com for instructions on configuring most routers for port forwarding.

RS-232 Serial Compatibility Notes

The NCD RS-232 Serial communications module is compatible with standard RS-232 signals (+/-10VDC), which are not directly compatible with UART signals from a microprocessor.  If you are working with Arduino, Microchip PIC, or other common microcontroller, a communications module is not required.   Microcontrollers will directly talk to the on-board processor of all NCD controllers.

USB Compatibility Notes

This device is compatible with USB communications, which will mount as a Virtual COM Port on your computer.  All device functions will be accessed via the virtual com port using standard serial commands.  The default baud rate is 115.2K Baud for most NCD devices.  USB Drivers are included with most versions of Windows, but users of other operating systems may want to download the latest drivers directly from the FTDI web site.

WiFi Compatibility Notes

When using a WiFi communication module, it is essential that you use the ZIGMO_PCB to configure the WiFi network settings.

NCD offers many custom IoT electronic design services to help tailor our product to your exact needs.  Whether you are looking for custom firmware, circuit board modifications, metal enclosures, or industrial color printing, we can help you with a wide variety of design services.

Custom IoT Electronic Design Services Process

Most of our users purchase off-the-shelf hardware for initial testing.  Once everything is working, they contact us to build a custom solution which may include specialized changes to the board, firmware, connectors, etc.  Custom boards have many advantages such as reduced wiring, easy installation, small size, less power consumption, and in some cases, an overall reduction in product cost.  Custom IoT Electronic Design Services will have your company name and logo on the board as well as the enclosure.

Customized IoT Electronics

NCD engineers can help build a customized solution for your particular application based on the designs you see on our website.  We can combine devices onto a single board, change the shape, or even some of the components to meet your exact needs.  We also provide turn-key metal enclosures with powder coating and full-color printing on the top side starting at just $500 for setup!  We have more than 20 years of experience in electronics design and manufacturing.  All of our products are designed and manufactured in the USA, so we are here to support the products we make.  We only ask that our customers prototype their needs using our existing products before we customize.

Customization Guidelines

  • Custom designs should be based on our existing product because we can’t build rockets or electric cars over here!
  • We do not provide customization services if it involves the introduction of a new or untested technology.
  • Custom engineering fees depend on your requirements, so please contact us for a quote!
  • We maintain ownership of all designs, including our customized designs as they are based on our existing Design.
  • We will only ship the customized product to you or your authorized agents.
  • We have an NDA available if needed.
  • The turn-around time is about 2-3 weeks.

Getting Started with Product Customization

All you have to do is contact us and we will walk you through the process from beginning to end, based on your individual needs.  Some people are surprised at how fast we finish CAD design (usually a few hours), but keep in mind, we still have to build your design, which takes considerably more time.  When we customize product, here are the general services we provide:

  • We design the circuit board.
  • We communicate with our customers throughout the customization and manufacturing process.
  • We manufacture surface mount stencils and circuit boards.
  • We program our pick and place machines to build your boards.
  • We build a working sample and run it through our wave solder machine.
  • We test your custom IoT solution.
  • Once the design is finalized it won’t be possible to make changes during production (changes cost money and require us to repeat the above processes)
  • Once it meets all your requirements, we will start production as needed.
  • We work with our metal fabricators to design a metal enclosure if required.
  • You work with our artist to print the top side of the enclosure in full color with your company logo if required.
